Plasma Membrane

The Cell

The plasma membrane protects the cell from the outside environment. It allows the cell to be separate from its environment. Certain proteins are located in the plasma membrane, which allow signals and molecules to pass through.

The Kitchen

The walls and doors of the kitchen protect it from the outside. Things that would harm the kitchen like rain and wind can't enter because of the doors and walls. The doors allow the things you want in the kitchen in, but keep others out.

The doors and walls of the kitchen are like the plasma membrane of the cell. They protect the system from outside substances and allow only certain items into their system.
